Bavaria 2018

In June we spent a glorious week in Bavaria meeting up with our friend Norah from Australia.
We spent a couple of days in the centre of Munich before hiring a car and driving down to Fussen in Southern Bavaria. The main point of the holiday was to see the castles of “Mad” King Ludwig II: Linderhof, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein.
Bavaria is a beautiful part of Germany and Fussen was a particularly charming town to be the base of our excursions.
Some 4 years before this holiday I happened to see a programme on TV entitled The Fairytale Castles of King Ludwig II presented by the historian Dan Cruickshank and I was hooked – I resolved to visit them. They seemed such strange follies, unappreciated at the time but now among the most visited sites in Germany.
At the time of updating this page (June 2025) the BBC still has the programme available here.
