Homes

Most dwellings built since the revolution are to a set size and plan. With few exceptions, houses are bungalows with a front veranda and a central door between two windows. From what I could see Cubans are house proud and keep everything clean and tidy. There was little litter in the streets.

Even the blocks of flats were free from graffiti.

Shops

There is still rationing of basic food stuffs in Cuba, in parallel with the growing “private” sector. One oddity is that everyone gets the same allowance, no matter what. So a new-born baby has a coffee allowance!

Left an official Government Ration Shop. You need tokens from your Ration Book to get your basic staples from here.

This reminded Ann of the Woolworths she worked in on Saturdays when she was still at school.

S1

The Cuban government allows a growing amount of private enterprise,
either from people’s homes or as street stalls.

The sitting woman is selling containers so that you can fill up with cheap beer in the shop behind her.
All very relaxed and I never saw anyone drunk throughout the holiday.
