Alleyways

The charm of old Dubrovnik is in the warren of back alleyways.

Here Gerry is pointing out the corbels used for hanging carpets.

Below the translation of this 1597 graffiti reads “I am warning you ball players. Peace be with you, but remember you will die.” Obviously a local resident, disturbed by the local youth of the time, threatening an extreme red card!

Unlike Venice, most of the houses are occupied by the locals.

This old convent of St Mary was dissolved by Napoleon and is now a block of flats. The tympanum shows the Annunciation scene surmounted by the coats of arms of some of the main noble families of the time.

A glimpse of the Cathedral from an alleyway.

Ann undaunted by the steps!
