From Fiordland in the South West to the Otago Peninsula on the East Coast was a long drive. The Otago Peninsula though is a great place to chill-out.

A very sparse landscape. We had a farmstay here which was perfect for leisurely walks either along the beach or inland.

The big draw here is the Royal Albatross Centre at the extremity of the peninsula which is the world's only mainland breeding colony of these birds.

Once reared, these strange birds spend 5 years flying over oceans circling Antarctica before coming back to land again at its original nesting ground.

We were lucky to see a male Royal Albatross feed its plump chick.

Within the grounds of the Royal Albatross Centre is the strategic Fort Taiaroa.

This late 19th century breech-loader is in an underground circular gun pit. It was aimed while below ground, then raised, fired and returned back into the pit by the recoil for reloading.

We took advantage of our farm stay to take an evening wildlife tour. Eventually we did spot the rare Yellow Eyed penguins returning to their nests.
