I remember clearly the day we arrived in Munich - Wednesday 27th June. Why? Well our hotel was in the centre with our bedroom overlooking a pedestrianised area with lots of Bier Kellers and restaurants with outside eating - all with big screens set up to show the crucial Germany v South Korea match in the final knock-out stage of the World Cup. Surely Germany were bound to win & I resigned myself to loud drunken celebrations all night long (ear-plugs to the ready). When we returned to our hotel after a late meal, we surprisingly walked through deserted, quiet streets. The night porter who I think was Turkish, delightedly told us in more detail than perhaps Ann & Norah really wanted, how the biggest upset of the tournament had occurred & Germany the hot favourites had been knocked out by the lowly-ranked South Koreans. The city was in stunned mourning! Result? A peaceful night's sleep - no need for ear-plugs.

Munich was a charming city with a lot of history, however I was very surprised seeing several straight copies of famous landmark buildings from Florence round Franz Joseph Platz. Somehow Renaissance architecture sits awkwardly next to Northern Gothic.
