Cespedes was a wealthy Cuban landowner who freed his slaves and made the declaration of Cuban independence in 1868 which started the Ten Years' War for independence from Spain.
The small fake Classical folly in the centre of this photo stands on the spot where according to Cuban legend, the city was founded in 1599.
This 18th Century Cuban Baroque palace was the Governor's palace. Now it houses the City Museum. Beware of all the security guards who want tips for explaining what is in each of the rooms you visit (even if you don't want them to!).
