The Design Museum

The Design Museum is now housed in the old Commonwealth Institute in Kensington. The distinctive building was opened in 1962. I fondly remember playing County Chess matches in one of its conference rooms. One of the more spectacular environments I played in. In the 1990’s The Foreign & Commonwealth Office ceased the funding for the upkeep of the building and in 2016 The Design Museum took over the premises and two years later it was awarded European Museum of the Year. A fascinating place to explore the history and development of the built environment and everyday objects. Visiting the Design Museum makes for an interesting counterpoint to its neighbour in South Kensington – The Victoria and Albert Museum.
