A welcome revisit to Melbourne with our excellent hosts, Norah & Max.
The Royal Botanic gardens are a great quiet retreat for the city.
The Shrine of Remembrance war memorial somehow reminded me of the Freemason's Temple in Covent Garden in the centre of London.
Captain Cook's Cottage is in Fitzroy Gardens. It is doubtful that the sea captain ever lived in it as it was built by his parents in Whitby after he joined the Royal Navy. Nevertheless there is the family connection & it is therefore the oldest building on the continent.
The Mornington Peninsula is an outer suburb of Melbourne and one of the most popular tourist spots in the area. We had an interesting walk along the cliffs with the sea on one side & the gardens of some of the most expensive homes on the other side.
The Point Nepean Quarantine Station was opened in 1852 and is the second oldest intact quarantine station in Australia. Needless to say with mass immigration in the 19th century to Australia from Europe & elsewhere (including some of my Irish and Maltese ancestors) it was a very busy station. It only stopped operation in 1980.
