Spectacular views from this high rock - in fact spectacular views everywhere. We were standing on a rocky outcrop with ancient carvings.
However the main Rock Art was to be found at Twyfelfontein. The rock engravings are up to 6,000 years old.
There were an enormous number of the carvings - amazing that they lasted so well.
This was one of the hotter days on our trip 35C - even though it was Autumn.
Butter Trees. They looked dead to me, but are in fact perfectly healthy.
Candle Tree. Quite rare.
The Welwitschia mirabilis is the most enigmatic plant in Africa, only occurring in certain parts of Namibia. It is in effect a tree with its trunk underground and only ever having two leaves. Some specimens have been dated to over a thousand years old.
Welwitschia mirabilis
Termite mounds were common. I was surprised to learn that the vast nests are entirely underground and that the mounds are made up from the excavated earth.
Yes it is very desolate in the middle of the Namib Desert.
Hobatare Lodge is run by Steve Braine, one of Namibia's top naturalists. He had a program on the BBC a while back in the Wild about Animals series. Very friendly and knowledgeable.
The bedroom in our little bungalow. The generator stopped working at about 9pm, but they supplied lamps for us to use. We did not really need the mosquito nets, as it was the wrong time of year.
Ann & I at the outside barbeque
Some of our group at the same BBQ. From the left: Alan & Lynne, Cindy (our guide) and Mary & Derek.
Celebrating at the best hotel in Swakopmund (I think there is only the one proper hotel in Swakopmund - but never mind it was OK). From the left: Me & Ann, Lynne, Cindy, Mary & Derek and Pauline & David.
