Typical cell from about 1850

Single cells measured 4ft by 7ft. Water was collected in tanks on the roof and supplied to hand basins installed in each cell. Cells were lit with oil lamps. Cell furniture consisted of a fold-down table, a stool, a hammock and a toilet bucket. Prisoners were allowed a Bible.

A decorated cell

In the last 12 months of the prison's operation in 1991 some prisoners were granted permission to paint their cell walls as a farewell gesture.

A Female Prisoner's Register

The unfortunate Rose Williams at the age of 17 was incarcerated for a week for "Loitering in the Street" in 1901 and on another occasion for "Idle & disorderly". She died in the prison. Tough times.

Australian Travel Photos:-

After we flew down from Darwin we met up with our friends Norah & Max who suggested staying in Fremantle rather than Perth for this stage of our holiday. A good choice. Ann & I loved Fremantle with its Victorian charm and excellent restaurants.

I enjoyed our tour of the Fremantle Gaol, even if some of details about it were a bit grim.

The day trip over to Rottnest Island is almost obligatory. Quokkas seem to be the "in" marsupial to share a selfie.
