Spissky Hrad - Spis Castle - from Spisska Kapitula
Slovakia 2007 Spis Castle
|
Spis Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most visited attractions in Slovakia.
The castle is built on a dominant hill that can be seen for miles around in the surrounding countryside. We stopped off at the nearby Spisska Kapitula, which is a Catholic enclave. The village and everything in it is geared to the large Seminary. One of the houses proudly displayed a plaque commemorating John-Paul II's visit there.
Its a very long way from the car park to the castle.
Originally a Royal castle, it was bequeathed to leading noble families. Because of its size, the cost of upkeep was enormous, leading to its neglect and in the 18th century a fire destroyed it, leaving the romantic ruins we see today.
This photo was taken within the outer walls, showing the imposing bulk of the main castle.
Quiz time:- What is a Spermophile? We saw them in the grounds of the castle & thought the description in quaint English on a notice hilarious.
Great views over the surrounding plain.
Now that Slovalia is in the EU, I am sure more of us Westerners will be visiting the country. But for now, farewell Spis & Slovakia.
