When our daughter & Jo's son went on the trail a few years before us, they went on a cheaper backpacker version of the Inca Trail, where the toilet facilities were a spade with instructions to fill in the hole afterwards. On our more "luxurious" version we stayed in government controlled rest camps with newly built facilities. Unfortunately the facilities were not subsequently maintained & had fallen into a dreadful state. At times we longed for a spade & bush!
On the last night of the trail, the porters entertained us with singing & we reciprocated. I think Michele & Ann were largely responsible for our contribution to the evening's entertainment. Sung to the tune of - It's a Long Way to Tipperary:-
It’s a long way to Machu Picchu
It’s a long way to go
It’s a long way to Machu Picchu
And the worst Banjos we know
It’s a long way to Machu Picchu
But we are all still here
It’s a long way to Machu Picchu
But we don’t have diarrhoea – Yet!
It’s a long way to Machu Picchu
But we have all got Hugo,
The Porterderos & Ricardo
And the best chef we know
Adios Porterderos,
Hasta Luego
It’s a long way to Machu Picchu
Muchos Gracias to you!
