Cliffs of Moher & The Burren

The Cliffs of Moher and the Burren are near each other in County Clare. The Cliffs being one of the most visited sites in Ireland. They are both in a UNESCO Global Geopark. I had never heard of Geoparks before – but now I think they are a good idea!

It was breezy walking along the tops of the Cliffs of Moher – very reminiscent of the (not so) White Cliffs of Dover. The landscape of the Burren was very wild, dramatic and inspiring. I would have loved to have had more time to explore it.

The Burren

The name Burren comes from the old Irish Boirinn meaning “Rocky District” – very apt. This is a large area of barren landscapes with scattered small farms here & there. Checking up on the area after the holiday, I was amused to come across this 17th century description of the Burren as a land “where there is not enough water to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury him“. You can’t win them all.

A fabulous place for trekking.
