Lahemaa National Park

Lahemaa is Estonia’s largest & most varied National Park with a great coastline for swimming & fishing, extensive forest – mostly pine & spruce – and the odd cultural gem such as Palmse Manor. Again great for cyclists, as very flat.

Deserted beaches despite the nice weather.
(below) A local guide explaining Altja village life to us – she was very amusing. She said that originally the Estonians offered the Russian occupiers 10% of their grain & to keep 90% to feed their own population. But the Russians said No! – give us 100% of your grain & you can keep 10%. I am not sure political humour travels well – but the anti-Russian sentiment was clear enough.

The very pretty, restored 18th century Palmse Manor. Great to relax in its grounds.
