Egypt Reflections

We cruised on the very pleasant MS Sherry Boat. We thought that we were being particularly special travelling in style by choosing a 5* ship, until we found out that most of the 300+ cruise ships on the Nile are classified as 5*.

A Dahabeah is a smaller and much more old fashioned way to sail the Nile.

The time-honoured way to sail the Nile is on a Felucca. Though we did a short trip round Lord Kitchener’s Island at Aswan, unfortunately we did not fancy a week on such a basic vessel.

We had a very relaxing afternoon sail on this Felucca on the Nile at Aswan.

In the photo on the right the Aga Khan III Mausoleum is silhouetted on the hill He was a man of considerable talents and admired the world over. At his diamond Jubilee in 1954, he was weighed against diamonds, which were then distributed among his followers.

It gets pretty busy at both Luxor and Aswan.

At some places – such as at the Esna Lock there was a lot of congestion of the big tourist ships.

The balloon rides from Luxor over the Valley of the Kings are at dawn, before the heat of the day sets in.

The boat laid on entertainment in the evenings. We have a video of the Whirling Dervish.

Another common Tourist entertainment is the belly dancer. Unfortunately for me, this one wanted a couple of helpers.

Every day the cleaners of our cabin left our towels in imaginative shapes in our rooms. Quite charming & fun.

Enjoying the Views

Sunset over the Nile. Time for Sundowners! The Egyptian beer was OK (i.e. a chilled lager), but I didn’t get beyond a mouthful of the Egyptian wine. Ann & Jo did persevere a bit with different white & red varieties, but didn’t think any bottles were worth bringing back.
