Villages & Towns

Typical Alpine chalet in Zdiar
Levoca
Levoca is a charming town. Surrounded by the original medieval walls, there are many old buildings reflecting the earlier wealth of the town. This church houses the highest wooden Gothic Altarpiece in the world. Below, one of the original watch towers on the city wall – taken at dusk.

An example of some of the odd architectural styles in this town house in the main square in the centre of Levoca.
We stayed in a charming hotel (Hotel Arkada), which is a renovated Burgher’s house with a great restaurant in the original cellars.
The Museum of Liptov Village in Pribylina
A nearby valley was flooded in 1991 for the Liptovska Mara Dam. Many of the old village houses were carefully taken down & recreated in this open air museum in Pribylina.

Several of the houses have been recreated, in many cases with the original 19th century / early 20th century furnishings.
I like the cot suspended from the ceiling.

In addition to many houses & barns, the local inn, church & a magnificent hunting lodge were also saved & set up here. Odd to find a large Baroque altarpiece from the church. I think the scarecrows were just for fun!
