Sakkara is part of the great Pharaonic necropolis of Memphis and contains the earliest Pyramids. This is the first true Pyramid complex, built for the Pharaoh Djoser, over 4,500 years ago.
This entrance is part of the wall enclosing the whole Pyramid and Temple complex of Djoser.
After passing through the colonnaded entrance you emerge into the South Courtyard.
Djoser's Pyramid with the Heb-sed buildings in the foreground, used for the jubilee festivals.
Looking from the South Courtyard towards the later Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, all within the great Pharaonic necropolis complex - shows how large this complex was.
