Spis Castle

Spis Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most visited attractions in Slovakia.
The castle is built on a dominant hill that can be seen for miles around in the surrounding countryside. We stopped off at the nearby Spisska Kapitula, which is a Catholic enclave. The village and everything in it is geared to the large Seminary. One of the houses proudly displayed a plaque commemorating John-Paul II’s visit there.

The Keep & Inner Bailey. Originally a Royal castle, it was bequeathed to leading noble families. Because of its size, the cost of upkeep was enormous, leading to its neglect and in the 18th century a fire destroyed it, leaving the romantic ruins we see today.
This photo was taken within the outer walls, showing the imposing bulk of the main castle.
The Lower Ward. Quiz time:- What is a Spermophile? We saw them in the grounds of the castle & thought the description in quaint English on a notice hilarious.

Great views over the surrounding plain.
Now that Slovakia is in the EU, I am sure more foreign tourists will be visiting the country. But for now, farewell Spis & Slovakia.
