Hill of Witches

In a wooded part of the Spit is The Hill of Witches, a trail consisting of about 80 large wooden sculptures illustrating Lithuanian folktales. The initial few sculptures were erected in 1979 & they have been added to ever since. I thought they were remarkably well carved. All of them have stories to tell & we needed our guide Lukas to tell us some of the more colourful ones.
Many of the sculptures are of Neringa, the giantess from Lithuanian legend who is said to have formed the Curonian Spit by carrying sand in her apron to protect fishermen from the stormy sea.
