Plokstine Cold War Museum

Any excuse to dress up – where’s that red button?

Secretly built by the Russians in the 1960’s it housed 4 deep concrete covered silos each with a Nuclear missile. If a state of war would have been declared the concrete covers would be moved out of the way to enable the missiles to be launched (& no doubt contribute to annihilation of the human race 😱!)Obviously never used & after independence the site was abandoned for many years until refurbished & opened as the world’s only nuclear missile base museum in 2012.

It was interesting having the tour & having the process of launching the nuclear weapons described which could reach anywhere in Europe. I couldn’t help thinking what could have happened with a bored / drunk / maniac simply pressing a couple of buttons. So close to the stuff of nightmares.

Underground control room information
Don’t ask ……..

One underground room had one wall with period Russian propaganda posters & the other plastered with Western ones.

The deep nuclear missile silos – the netting on top is for safety reasons

Ready for launch!
