Birds
Our guide, Frank Simms, was a fanatical twitcher with an infectious enthusiasm & was keen to show us the enormous variety of birds in Costa Rica.
The birds below include those belonging to the following groups:- Waterfowl, woodpeckers, parrots, Quetzal & hummingbirds.

On our first boat ride in Tortuguero we saw this Anhinga successfully fishing. It took a while for the bird to get the fish the right way round before it could swallow it whole, head first. Afterwards it indulged in a spot of sunbathing to dry off its feathers.
Hummingbirds are just so difficult to photograph. They are tiny & rarely stay still on a twig for very long and they are even more difficult to catch feeding. I had to anticipate when they might pause when feeding & then hope I had caught a good shot. Patience was a necessity for capturing photos of these birds. I haven’t yet identified the different species of hummingbirds. Most of the photos were taken at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge, where feeding stations were positioned round the terrace bar; a good marketing ploy as guests were tempted to buy cocktails while waiting to take their next shot.
