Te Puia

A rather aggressive traditional greeting. The chief host is running towards our group’s “leader” with a ceremonial spear. Very Macho. If the visitor flinches, then it does not auger well for the visit.

New Zealand Reflections

This is a modern copy of a war canoe. An extraordinary prow.

Meeting House. I wish our Civic buildings back home were so lovingly decorated.

Pataka – Storehouse This communal storehouse is raised up from the ground, so that it is kept dry when it rains (as demonstrated on the day!) and also out of reach from rodents.

Craft Workshop. Local Maori apprentices learn the traditional skills to help keep their culture alive.

Traditional Entertainment. An evening’s song, dance, fighting & poi round off the day well. OK very tacky, but fun to watch. There are a couple of short videos of some of the show here and here.
