Jerash

Jerash is a large sprawling site with some poor recent reconstructions. The city was old by the time Pompey conquered the region in the 1st century AD.
An unusual feature is a capital on the bottoms of the pilasters on Hadrian’s arch.

Jordan 2014 Photos:
The Hippodrome was very large. Only a fraction of it has been restored.

The Oval Plaza

Though the floor of the Plaza is mostly original, old photographs show that many of the columns and their entablatures have been recreated.

The South Theatre
We were treated to some impromptu bagpipe music in this theatre. It has good acoustics.

The North Theatre
The Temple of Artemis
The columns are not rigid and our guide had fun making them rock slightly with some wedges where the arrow is pointing! So if in the future you read about a column falling over………..

The Cardo Maximus
The original paved road still has the grove marks made by countless carts over the centuries.

The Nymphaeum – an impressive ornamental fountain.
