Edfu

The Temple of Horus at Edfu is one of the best preserved in Egypt, being built later than most others, in the Ptolemaic period (i.e. after Alexander the Great, 323 BC)

The largest Pylon of any temple. It is certainly very impressive now that they have cleared the area in front of it.

Egypt Reflections

I am not sure of the significance of this part of the decoration on the Pylon, but the headdresses looked distinctly odd.

Jo & Ann by the Horus statue with (reputedly) Cleopatra’s son, Caesarion, (i.e. “Little Caesar”) between its feet. Didn’t do Caesarion a lot of good though; no sooner had Cleopatra committed suicide than Octavian executed Caesarion saying “Two Caesars is one too many” & the once mighty Egypt became a province of Imperial Rome.

The Court of Offerings with the façade of the Hypostyle Hall.

This detail is above the entrance to the Hypostyle Hall

I couldn’t resist taking these photos. The framing of the columns in the early evening light is just so special.

One of the Ptolemaic Pharaohs being administered to by two Goddesses.

The Holy of Holies. This is the ceremonial barge to transfer the statue of Horus to team up with Isis.

The surrounding outer walls of the Temple.
