Curonian Spit & Klaipeda

The Curonian Spit is a 60 mile sand dune that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea and is the home of the highest drifting sand dunes in Europe. The Northern part is Lithuanian & the Southern is Russian.

We stayed in Klaipeda, the only major port in Lithuania. It made the base from which we could explore the Curonian Spit. The guided tour of the “Old Town” was very brief & nondescript – for example, quoting our guide, “over there is where the castle was, but it was fully destroyed & there is nothing now to see.”
