Amalfi Coast 2025

In August we went on a small group tour visiting the Amalfi Coast staying in a small village, Bomerano, in the Agerola commune high up in the Lattari Mountains of the Campania Region of Southern Italy. Bomerano’s main claim to fame (beyond being a very nice laid-back country village) is that it is the start of the Path of the Gods Mountain trail, with breathtaking scenery along the way.

We enjoyed this holiday – but with two main caveats! Firstly the Amalfi Coast area is suffering severely from over-tourism. Amalfi, Positano and Capri were unpleasantly overcrowded – far too many tourists for the limited space to accommodate them. The mountainous terrain makes it difficult to build new roads and apparently there is a ban on any new buildings in this region – hardly surprising if you look at it – how do you build on the remaining steep mountain sides! Secondly, though the distances are very short (as the crow flies) it took over half an hour to get from Bomerano to Amalfi due to the number of hairpin bends required to go down the mountains and traversing the deep gullies.

We stayed in the very pleasant Hotel Due Torri owned by two enthusiastic brothers who are excellent chefs. We went with the holiday company Exodus who had planned a good varied itinerary. On the first full day we visited the port of Amalfi & then took the ferry to Positano. Both bustling with tourists. The following day we visited Herculaneum in the morning & the nearby Pompeii in the afternoon. They were fascinating, made even more fun with our enthusiastic guide, Raffaello for both sites. The next day we walked part of the popular “Path of the Gods” trek with breathtaking views high up in the mountains. The following day it was another boat ride to the island of Capri. We found the smaller town, Anacapri more interesting with its Villa San Michele being particularly special. On our free day, Ann & I visited Naples, a city with a great buzz to it. The National Archaeological Museum was particularly impressive with a lot of exhibits from Herculaneum & Pompeii making it an excellent compliment to our visit to the sites from a couple of days earlier. On our last full day we visited the less crowded mountain town of Ravello. Much more enjoyable than Amalfi & Positano and where we caught up with last minute shopping.
