Capri

For over 2,000 years the island of Capri has been a special holiday retreat. Roman emperors built villas here. The ruggedness of the island encouraged people to visit and forget about the hustle & bustle of large cities such as Naples. It gained a reputation as a tolerant laid-back place. Many famous names from the world of the arts have stayed here including: Somerset Maughan, Gracie Fields, Oscar Wilde, Compton Mackenzie and Maxim Gorky who got Lenin to stay in his villa.
Unfortunately its popularity means it is a very crowded island for a short day’s visit. We spent more time in Anacapri than Capri town itself. We took a coach to Anacapri and then the chairlift to the highest point on the island, Monte Solaro for epic views of the island. After returning to Anacapri on the chairlift and a quick lunch, it was off to visit the fabulous Villa San Michele. On returning to Capri town itself we were not tempted by the up-market & expensive shops but instead had the odd limoncello and visited the Augustus Gardens which frankly were a disappointment. They were very small & the views were not as good as from Monte Solaro.
