Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein are within a short walk of each other. Ludwig II was brought up in the medieval-styled Hohenschwangau which with the mountain setting and the nearby Alpsee and Swan lakes is a high camp fairytale environment like no other I have ever seen!

Ludwig’s father had Hohenschwangau decorated with representations of various ancient myths including those of the Swan Knight, Lohengrin. Richard Wagner was a friend of Ludwig’s influencing the young King in his medieval fantasies.
