On the Highway to the Dead Sea from Aqaba, we had a stop overlooking the Dead sea with Lot's cave up a nearby hill & this rock formation therefore called Lot's Wife. Sodom & Gomorrah therefore were supposed to be nearby.

It looks like a normal sea.

It is so salty you can't possibly sink or swim. I tried to swim, but just could not manage it as I kept rolling round instead. In the process I accidently splashed some water into my nostrils & it stung terribly. Mo, our guide suggested we did not shave that morning as the salt would badly sting the smallest of cuts.

You most probably already know that the Dead sea is the lowest area on the surface of the planet, being about 427 metres below sea level. However I hadn't realised that the level is going down by about 1 metre or more per year due to the restrictions by both Israel & Jordan on the flow of river Jordan which feeds the sea.

You can see from this photo that hotels and spas were originally built right on the shore line, but over the years with the drop in the level of the sea, guests are having to walk out further from the original promenades to get to the Dead Sea.
