South Vietnam
It is a 12 hour flight from Heathrow to Vietnam which is 7 hours ahead of UK time. So we landed at 6:00 am local time thoroughly jet-lagged and straight into a whirlwind city tour.
We were immediately astonished by the number of motorbikes and scooters on the roads. Saigon (or Ho Chi Min City – HCMC) has a population of 10m – bigger than London – and most people have bikes rather than cars. The city has no metro or underground public transport system and the public busses hardly run in the centre of the city, hence the sea of bikes on the roads & the pavements! We had to be particularly vigilant walking round let alone crossing roads.
