Exploring Transylvania

We drove from Moldovia into Transylvania through the Bicaz Gorge and hiked in the Hasmas National Park. Unfortunately there is very little mobile phone reception in the area which meant that our guide couldn’t contact our driver to pick us up at the end of the trek. So we then had to trudge back up to get reception, resulting in a few grumpy hikers. The Red Lake was so named due to a 19th century earthquake collapsing part of a mountain side disgorging bright mineral deposits. Unfortunately it is now no longer red, but its name endures. Later in the holiday we had another trek in the Carpathians, which was much more pleasant & then on the return journey we had a brief roadside phot-opportunity stop for the dramatic Bran Castle.
The Carpathians are a delight to hike with very pleasant, Alpine-like views.

Bran Castle – a “must visit” for most tourists, thanks to Bram Stoker. Nevertheless a striking castle in a superb mountain top setting.
