Sibiu
Again another town that we only had a brief time to explore. Sibiu shows the Habsburg influence in a lot of its grand buildings. We explored just the central area which consists of 3 linked squares: Piata Huet (the Hun Square), Piata Mica (the Small Square) and Piata Mare (the Big Square).
The 19th century Romanian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral was decorated in a mix of Western & Eastern religious styles, which to me looked a bit odd.

The uphill approach to Piata Huet (left), this time with the church spire of the Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary rather than a defensive tower on top. The cathedral dominates this small square.
To get to Piata Mica, you need to pass over the Liar’s Bridge, so called as apparently deceitful traders used to be thrown off it. This square is filled with stalls selling tourist knick-knacks.
The main Piata Mare was taken over for preparations for a Marathon, hence all the temporary barriers. Except for all the race preparations, the square itself was a very elegant space surrounded by grand merchant houses and Habsburg official buildings.
