The Red Centre

One of the many highlights of our Australia holiday was the Red Centre. We stayed in the Ayers Rock Resort and took three main trips visiting The Olgas, Kings Canyon and the iconic Ayers Rock itself.

There is now a dual naming for many sights: Kata Tjuta / The Olgas and Uluru / Ayers Rock. As far as I know currently Kings Canyon (named after the creek that runs through it) retains its European name, but it may change to Watarrka in the future.

The Kata Tjuta / The Olgas are 36 large sacred domed rocks 16 miles from Uluru / Ayers Rock. Kings Canyon’s high sides (100 metres high) makes the moist canyon floor a refuge in times of drought. Unfortunately it is nearly 200 miles from Uluru / Ayers Rock making for a very early pre-dawn start.
