Hemingway’s House – Finca La Vigia
Hemingway loved Cuba and stayed here for some 20 years.
His house, Finca La Vigia is on the outskirts of Havana. He lived here until returning to the USA in 1960, after the Revolution. He was apparently on good terms with Fidel Castro, until Castro started appropriating private property.
After Hemingway committed suicide in 1961, the state seized his home and contents. It has recently been renovated and is now a 1960’s time capsule, preserved as the writer left it.
The Finca Vigia Foundation is a USA – Cuban collaboration to restore & preserve Hemingway’s home.
To protect the interior, visitors are not allowed inside. However the rooms of the bungalow can be viewed through the open windows & doors.
Hemingway’s wife, Mary Welsh, built a nearby tower for Hemingway to have more peace & quiet in which to write.
Hemingway’s fishing boat, the Pilar has been transferred to the garden. Graves of his dogs are in front of it.
The nearby sleepy fishing village of Cojimar was where Hemingway sailed from & is associated with his novel The Old Man & The Sea. Below a memorial to the village’s most famous sailor.
