Trsteno & Ston

Trsteno & Ston are two old towns near to Dubrovnik.
The main claim to fame for Trsteno is its Arboretum.
Dubrovnik 2011 Photos:
Claimed to be the world’s oldest Arboretum. Unfortunately my searches on the internet don’t seem to back up that claim. Now however it is little more than a large run down garden. Neptune’s Grotto is below.

My guide book indicated that this tiny chapel dedicated to St Michael in Trsteno housed a work by Titian (or possibly – School of Titian). The chapel was locked and none of the locals had any idea about it. This photo was taken through a side window.
The chapel is in a poor state of repair, with the painting casually propped up on the altar. Again the boast of having such a painting is not supported by any internet searches I did.

Ston
There are two villages called Ston – Veliki Ston & Mali Ston on either side of the hill in the photo. For defensive purposes a wall was built in the 15th century. Claiming to be the second longest such wall after the Great Wall of China, I was a little disappointed to find it is only a little over 4 miles long. In the pursuit of exaggerated claims the Croatians had maybe not heard of Hadrian’s Wall?

A charming old boat house outside Ston.

An ancient drinking fountain in Ston.

Great seafood in this outdoor restaurant. Just what we needed after a long walk.
