Medinas & Souks

Kairouan Medina

I loved the brickwork of the old buildings in the Ouled el Hadef quarter of Tozeur.

Kairouan – Bir Barouta. On the upper floor of an inconspicuous building is this well (Bir in Arabic) with a camel powering the water wheel. Folklore has it that this well is connected to the one in Mecca.
I have a video of the camel working the water wheel. I remember at the time I felt very sorry for the camel, but no-one else seemed bothered.
Even though this type of shop could be in any Souk in any Arabic country, they are, though, still very colourful.
