Valletta

The view is from above the Main Gate looking out towards the bus terminus and Floriana. Sadly not many of the old pre-war buses are left now.

Again looking from the Main Gate in the other direction, into the city itself. Kingsway is the main thoroughfare. The ruins to the right are of the old Opera House, bombed in WWII and still left as an eyesore. Shame.

Victoria Square at the far end of Kingsway with the grand old library building in sunshine where my great-great grandfather was Chief Librarian. He looks very stern in his portrait below. You can get great coffees & pastries from the cafes in the square.

On the left is the Library arcade & on the right is a glimpse into the Neptune Courtyard of the Grandmaster’s Palace. The Maltese Parliament is now housed here.

Balconies. Don’t they just demand to be photographed? As a boy I used to love leaning out of the balcony at home, watching the world go by. All the main buildings & many ordinary houses have balconies – its that just some are grander than others.

From the Upper Barrakka Gardens you get the best views over the Grand Harbour. The harbour is one of the largest & deepest in the world.

The Upper Barrakka Gardens are the arcade upper right in the photo below.

Fort St Angelo in Vittoriosa from Upper Barrakka Gardens

A boat tour round the harbour was great. Lower Barrakka Gardens are on the left in this picture.

Looking towards Upper Barrakka Gardens.

Senglea Point

These imposing buildings comprised Bighi Hospital where my Dad worked in WWII.
