A long drive from Mission Beach takes us to Townsville where we took the ferry to Magnetic Island for a 3 night stay.
We took a nice trek called the Forts Walk to get great views over the island from abandoned WWII look-outs & gun emplacements.
Along the way we saw wild Koalas doing what they mostly do - sleeping on eucalyptus trees.
The old harbour near where we stayed had a lot of rock wallabies that had become too used to humans, relying on tourists to feed them. Should we have feed these wild creatures? We were told that their behaviour was such that now they would most probably starve if not fed. At our own mealtimes in the resort, we had large bushstone curlews elegantly strolling round our tables scavenging for scraps of food.
In my travel diary, I had noted that while at Magnetic Island I read a news item on the web saying that health warnings were being given out back home in London as the temperature was due to rise to 22 degrees centigrade. Meanwhile here in Australia we had been keeping our air conditioning down to 23 degrees centigrade overnight so that we could get a comfortable night's sleep!
