Manaca Iznaga Estate

Outside Trinidad is the Valle de los Ingenios (ingenio = sugar factory) a main sugar growing area in the 19th century, by which time one million slaves had been imported from West Africa. A terrible indictment of those involved, the racial and social consequences of which are still in evidence.

One of the large estates was Manaca Iznaga. The owner built this tower early in 1830 as a lookout for supervising slaves.

There are fine views over the valley from the top of the tower. Though interesting, nonetheless I was surprised to find out that the valley is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Without sounding too cynical; I wonder if some sites have been added to help boost the tourist trade?)
