El Jem

Built in the 3rd century AD, El Jem Amphitheatre is an enormous amphitheatre, second in size only to Rome’s Colosseum. Considering the fact that over the centuries the building was plundered for material to build local houses & mosques & was shelled by the Ottoman Turks, I think it is still in a better shape than the Colosseum.

El Jem Museum

The nearby museum was more enjoyable to visit than the better known Bardo in Tunis. Needless to say some of the mosaics reflected the gruesome activities within the amphitheatre.
