Bulla Regia

Bulla Regia was one of the most extraordinary towns in the Roman empire. To avoid the extreme heat, most of the villas were built underground – troglodyte fashion – hence there is little to see above ground.
House of Amphitrite
The house of Amphitrite is one of the best preserved underground villas. As with many of the villas, it has retained its mosaic floors in situ.

Amphitrite was the wife / consort of the sea god Poseidon. Here she is being attended to by two slaves with lobster attributes.

Some of the lead pipe work was still in place for this underground fountain.
