Dougga

Dougga is unusual for a Roman city in that it is built on the slopes of a hill. The Romans liked building their towns & cities on level ground & if a hill got in the way, they would simply flatten it – as they did when they rebuilt Carthage.
It is an ancient city, founded in the 6th century BC.
Dougga is the largest of the archaeological sites that we visited.

Latrines in the Bath of Cyclopes

This mosaic (on the right) in the Bardo was taken from the above Bath of the Cyclopes. I still think that the cyclopes in Vulcan’s forge have two eyes!

The Lybico-Punic Mausoleum
A royal Numidian mausoleum. Unfortunately a British archaeologist in the 1840s damaged it significantly while removing the inscriptions, which are now in the British Museum. The photo below shows the monument prior to its reconstruction.

A quadriga (4 horse chariot) from the monument.

Amphitheatre
Every Roman city had at least one amphitheatre. This one has particularly spectacular views as a backdrop.
