Greece 2000 – Athens Acropolis

Greece Photos:
All visitors were given leaflets outside the Acropolis stating the Greek case for returning the Elgin Marbles from the British Museum, back to Athens. Of course when you visit the BM in London, you can also get a leaflet explaining why they must remain in London.

This view is of the West facade of the Parthenon.
A view of the East facade of the Parthenon, showing the reconstruction work going on in its centre.

A close up of the East façade. Inside the Parthenon it looked like a shoddy building site.
Jo, Ann & Eleanor in front of the Erectheion and the Porch of the Caryatids.

View from the Propylaea showing the Olive tree given by Athena to the city in the competition with Poseidon, to win its favour. She “won”, hence the city is called Athens & not Poseida!
You are not supposed to pick up anything from the ground on the Acropolis & guards will blow their whistles if they see you. So of course, I had to lace up my shoelaces & have ended up with a leaf from this Olive tree, as a memento.
The photo on the left was taken in this holiday & the one on the right was taken when Ann & I first visited Greece, 25 years earlier in 1975. Hardly anything has changed – except Ann’s hair is a bit shorter now.
