Greece 2000 – Mycenae
Mycenae is where Homer’s King Agamemnon set out for the Trojan war.

Over 3,000 years old, I believe that The Lion Gate is one of the oldest monumental sculptures still standing in its original position.

The citadel is in a very impregnable position, being high up on a hill with a mountain behind.

I remember it was a relief to get out of the heat and inside the cool of the underground cistern.
This is outside the citadel. The original archaeologist (Schlieman) called this the “Treasury of Atreus” to give it an interesting name. It is also called the Tomb of Clytemnestra. Seeing as how (according to Homeric legend) she murdered her husband, Agamemnon on his return & was subsequently murdered by her son, I doubt if such a magnificent tomb would have been built for her. To be honest, no-one knows for sure what it was!
